This piece was made as a materials study for 'In Penkawr's Hall'. I've been coloring my drawings in Photoshop for some years now, and wanted to ease my re-entry into traditional media with a more straightforward composition.
In Culhwch ac Olwen, Arthur does battle with The Very Black Witch, Orddu, daughter of The Very White Which, from the uplands of Hell. With his dagger Carnwennan (Little White Hilt) he cuts her in two.
As usual I began with a very quick scribble in pen to establish the composition. This time I made a color draft as well (since there is no 'Undo' with traditional media). I then did a small study of the witch to establish how I was going to layer the washes and tones before moving on to the final piece.
